I liked being able to problem solve and guide customers in order to get them going again.
What I wish was different
I wish I would've been asked to transfer to a location here in Beaumont.
Advice
I would recommend anyone who goes into retail to understand customers do get upset, and it's best to leave it to a manager.

Retail Service Sales Specialist
July 2015 • Coffeyville, KS
What I liked
When I started I was just part time but often worked 40 hours a week. As my tenure with the company went on I was given more responsibility and met with regional management on numerous occasions to discuss possible advancement with the company after graduation.
I did sales calls to professional customers and anyone who had an account with us.
What I wish was different
Basically the only unpleasant things at this company are what you would typically expect when dealing with the public and working with a smaller group of individuals.
Advice
If you work here, do not be afraid to take steps to self promote. This job is commissioned. I received the "Shamrock Award" from the co-president and the store manager for outstanding sales achievement and customer service. Two times I received customer service awards and was recognized by upper management on more than one occasion. I worked with territorial sales reps and was given a lot of insight on what my future with the company could be if I choose to go back after graduation. I still talk with some of my co-workers that still work at the store regularly and a few of my regional managers.
Working this job will improve your self confidence and speaking abilities. If you are looking for a career in sales then get a job at this company. Commission, return customers and customers eventually gain a preference for you to wait on them.

Auto Parts Salesperson
May 2018 - August 2019 • Newton, KS
What I liked
I enjoyed everything about my job in Newton, and I enjoyed the people in the Gunnison store
What I wish was different
I wish at the Gunnison store that the manager would be more flexible with the hours and that I didn't have to work 6 hours a week
Advice
If you are a student and are applying at the Gunnison store, don't because the DM said no more part time students.
If you are in Newton KS and want a job there, Apply because the manager is amazing and the people are great.

September 2018 • Phoenix, AZ
What I liked
Laid back environment, flexibility of hours.
What I wish was different
Low level of trust between team, tend to be left out to dry.
Advice
Often times you have to take the lead yourself, just cause someone is your senior or holds the position of a leader/manager does not mean they can always be relied on.

Accounts Payable Intern
May - August 2019 • Springfield, MO
What I liked
This internship enabled me to work with multiple different people and work on my relational skills in a big corporation environment. I was able to have conversations with the CFO and other major heads of the accounting department. Interns were involved in meetings and the whole point of this internship was to dive into that big corporation environment as I mentioned previously. I was able to work with the utilities within the accounts payable department and was able to do every step and see how what I was doing impacted the company as a whole. I was really valued and loved the team atmosphere at O'Reilly. The cultural values are also strongly upheld here, which was an extremely positive thing to see.
What I wish was different
The only thing I wish had been different would have been if I was able to look into the different departments within the accounting realm within the company such as tax, receivables and even finance. I would have loved to shadow another intern and see what their work day consisted of.
Advice
I would say that the best thing that you could do is develop those relationships that will have a lasting impact when you further your career. You really want to set yourself apart from your competition in those interviews and a strong recommendation from former employers is awesome to have. Give everything you have every single day, even though the work might become tedious and mundane because what you're doing is very helpful whether you realize it or not.

Parts specialist
March 2016 • Wayzata, MN
What I liked
I absolutely love this job, I've worked here three summers now, and I fill in on breaks and occasional weekends. I actually worked at the Wayzata location only half of the week this past summer and the Mankato location the other half of the week. My ability to work at any store with one phone call is a huge advantage. I also love the work that I'm doing at the stores. I have found that I am learning something new every shift, and after working a few years, I feel very confident in role.
What I wish was different
My only issue with the position is the pay. Especially in the Orono/Wayzata area, O'Reilly consistently seems to have the lowest pay. Napa is about 30-40% higher and Advance is about 20-25% higher, it seems.
Advice
If you are interested in cars or the automotive industry and have some personal experience, auto parts stores are a great way to get your feet wet and get your foot in the door at the same time.
