Position Overview:

Math Jack Tutors are an integral part of instruction and assists students, faculty, and staff in implementing the course content and philosophies of the Lumberjack Mathematics Center program.

  • Hiring preference given to those able to work peak demand shifts.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  •  Independently provide individual and/or group coaching and mentoring to students in assigned subject areas.      
  •  Assisting students with the development of study skills.
  •  Assisting Graduate Teaching Assistants and/or faculty in LMC classrooms with related projects and assignments as needed.
  •  Grading homework, answering student questions regarding course content.
  •  Proctoring tests for groups up to 75 students, monitoring academic integrity.
  •  Attending informational/training meetings as scheduled/ required.
  •  Maintaining accurate timekeeping including the Webclock system and submission of paper time sheets on time.
  •  Ability to spontaneously explain and illustrate concepts in multiple ways and contexts, creating supplemental study materials as needed, knowledge of the content of all four LMC courses; tailoring materials and examples to student learning style.
  • Accepting feedback from the evaluation process and exhibiting improvement.
  • Knowing, following, and communicating LMC policies and procedures.
  • Support the LMC mission of supporting independent learning and creating an environment for student success.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of multiple math software programs, including MyMathLab, ALEKS, WebWork and general knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Model MAT 114 Course projects knowledge for class assignments covering analysis of data using spreadsheets for both peers and students; knowledge of bar graphs, pie charts, scatterplots and linear regression.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be an active NAU student (i.e. enrolled in classes and degree- or certification-seeking)
  • Must have and maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA)
  • Must have Sophomore status or above (or current Freshman status with MAT 136 expected complete by start of term for Fall '20 employment)
  • Must have completed MAT 136 OR MAT 125 and STA 270 with an "A" or "B"
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours per week
  • Must be able to attend weekly tutor training meetings, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday 4:00-5:30 PM, begins 1st week of fall term.

Additional Information:

Successful applicants are expected to complete the LMC Tutor training and MAT 108 , MAT 114 and MAT 125 content tests and MAT 114 projects within the first semester of employment.
