Position Overview
We are seeking students interested in local government careers to work in a Northern Arizona county or city government office for part of the 2026-2027 academic year to serve as a fellow. We are seeking 1-2 individuals that are interested in working in a dynamic community learning about how to manage the needs of residents and the impacts of tourism. The work is challenging, and we seek creative fellows looking to work on solutions for our communities. This is an amazing opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a local and dynamic government setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assistance with special projects in the Manager’s office may include:
- Emergency management and evacuation planning
- Grant identification and assistance
- Policy updates
- Project management
- Research and data gathering
- Budget development
- Legislative tracking
- Attending meetings, including City Council/Board of Supervisors meetings
- Assistance with additional tasks as required
- May assist departments with special projects. Department assignments may be matched with the Fellow’s areas of interest.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be an active NAU student (i.e. enrolled in classes and degree- or certification-seeking)
- Minimum GPA of 2.0
- Fluent in Microsoft Office Word; Excel
- Clear interest in public service/nonprofit sectors
- Available for fall, and/or spring (2026-2027) academic year for 15 hours per week
- 3.0 GPA or higher
- Upper level (junior or senior) undergraduate pursuing a degree related to local government (e.g. political science, public administration, business, communications, forestry, social work, sociology, criminology, public health)
- Strong interest in a career in local government
- Required to attend the annual ACMA conference in Sedona, AZ (January)
