Position Overview
The Teaching Assistant (TA) position holds a spectrum of responsibilities associated with effective, efficient, and inclusive learning spaces. Those responsibilities range from supporting classroom logistics (i.e., recording attendance and grading low-stakes assignments) to actively engaging with students in the construction of new disciplinary knowledge and the development of academic skills. TA’s must demonstrate considerable academic skill and disciplinary knowledge associated with assigned classwork.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Active Engagement Responsibilities:
    Acting independently and/or at the direction of the faculty partner, foster a community of
    learners by:
    • Building welcoming academic relationships with students
    • Creating inclusive learning spaces for diverse learners inside and outside the
      classroom
    • Re-teaching or clarifying course content, concepts, and academic skills
    • Assessing students’ prior knowledge as a means of developing, informing, and
      coordinating instruction and support
    • Being present and engaged in classroom active-learning activities (i.e., regularly
      circulating the room, asking students if they need additional support, asking
      clarifying questions)
  • TA performs highly skilled duties requiring considerable internal/external knowledge
  • TA exercises independent judgment and performs self-initiated tasks, and is responsible
    for developing, coordinating, and implementing assigned projects
  • TA requires a high level of related skills to perform work satisfactorily; work is almost
    always specialized.

Logistical Responsibilities:

  • With faculty supervision and guidance, grading homework, quizzes, examinations, or
    other required assignments in an efficient and timely manner
  • Emailing or engaging otherwise with students who demonstrate academic struggle or are
    absent
  • With faculty guidance or independently, offering feedback on formative or “small-stakes”
    assignments
  • Participating in online discussion forums or other small-stakes online activities
  • Offering the faculty logistical support such as passing out papers, taking attendance, or
    recording student activity

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be an active NAU student (i.e. enrolled in classes and degree- or certification-seeking)
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0
